Yesterday I went a lunch sponsored by the AICD and the guest speaker was the CEO of Coca-Cola. It was refreshing to hear a top ASX listed company CEO speak from a pragmatic point of view.
The topic was Diversity on boards and in senior management. Compared to other session I have attended recently on diversity, Terry really did focus on the issue throughtout the organisation rather than at board level. He told it as he saw it and was effective in bringing both sides of the issue to the forefront.
It's not all about gender and the proportion of females verses males. It about cultural differences, skill sets, and a long term outlook with effective planning.
He highlighted the need to develop a culture that is pervasive throughout the organisation. This requires time and effort by everyone.
It is definately not about having mandatory quotas.
